After graduating from Osaka University School of Dentistry in 1977, I opened a dental clinic in Akashi City in 1982 and have been a practicing dentist for about 40 years. (Click here for the website of Matsuga Dental Clinic)

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of my eldest son, who was born just the year the clinic opened and graduated as a 30th junior from the same university, I replaced him as director and I became the advisory senior director.Because of this, in the spring of 2018, I decided to retire from the front lines of clinical practice and take on a new challenge of my own.

In fact, before I began my dental education at Osaka University School of Dentistry, I received my education in the field of cultural studies at the Department of English and American Studies at Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Looking back, after my basic education up to high school, it was at this university that I first came into contact with the academic world through the study of Anglo-American culture. After my graduation, Osaka University of Foreign Studies was merged with Osaka University and became the Faculty of Foreign Languages, but as symbolized by the fact that the name of Osaka University of Foreign Studies was written in English, the education there was not limited to the mere acquisition of English in the manner of a vocational school. It included linguistics, phonetics, English literature including English poetry, international economics, international relations, business English, and so on. I was also deeply attracted to the study of Western culture as a whole, which I was exposed to there.

Later, due to the general policy of my life, I changed to the path of dentistry, which is like a mass of practical skills and learning, and I struggled hard as a practicing dentist. However, although I received some financial rewards for the repetitive and detailed work, which I could not say I was good at, I was mentally unsatisfied. I could not get used to the sense of the world of craftsmanship, and I continued to hold on to the desire for academic research from a broader perspective that I had been exposed to during my first years on campus.

At the beginning of 2018, when I was beginning to see the prospect of changing directors, I took the plunge and decided to pursue graduate studies in the humanities.As a first step, I enrolled in the graduate school of accounting at the University of Hyogo in Kobe Gakuentoshi in the spring of that year to deepen my understanding of accounting, which had begun to interest me after 40 years of self-accounting with a computer in the management of a clinic,During the two-year master’s program, I studied subjects related to management and accounting in general, including management, accounting, taxation, corporate law, and English-language accounting, and received a master’s degree in accounting.In 2020, I entered the Master’s Program of the Graduate School of Economics at the University of Hyogo, where I continued my research in the Regional Public Policy Course, aiming to study contemporary economic society from a broader perspective.At the recommendation of my professor, I submitted my master’s thesis, “International Taxation’s Response to the Dematerialization Transformation of the Modern Economy,” to the International Association of Public Economics, where I unexpectedly received the “Excellent Master’s Thesis Award.After that, I continued on to the doctoral program at the Faculty of Economics, and am currently continuing my research in the doctoral program.The research theme I am currently pursuing is “Essential Changes in the Modern Economy due to Digitalization, Networking, and Globalization.It is an extremely grandiose and formidable theme, but based on my experience in the IT field, which I have been working on since my working days, I would like to take the time to tackle it, considering that it will also serve as a summary of my life.

This is the third time I have moved from the humanities to the sciences and then to the social sciences, and I am deeply satisfied with my research life from a broader perspective, which I aspired to in my first campus life as a young man, and I am truly enjoying it every day.
